To holiday on the lovely island of Koh Samui is

in truth to climb into a postcard ......

 

It boasts around 4 million coconut trees and an enviable position in the Gulf of Thailand within the Province of Suratthani.

Measuring approximately 21 x 25 km with a circular road or around 55 km, largely coastal, Koh Samui is 25 km off the Thai mainland and can be reached in 1 hour by plane from Bangkok.

The island was populated by Chinese fishermen up to about 1980 until it was discovered by mainly hippy/backpacker style tourists who started to visit the splendid beaches and explore the rich forests.

At this time, travel to the island was just by boat.

Then the airport was constructed during the 1990's increasing tourist possibilities, improving the quality of accommodation and the sheer range of services expanded to what is on offer today.

 

The most beautiful beaches are probably those found on the East coast notably at Chaweng and Lamai (to swim, sun bathe, walk or just have a great time. it is also where you can find a lot of shops and restaurants).

Bo Phut and Mae Nam in the North are also very popular locations.

Additional attractions and points of interest can be reached by local boat, speed boat,

four wheel drive jeep or an air conditioned car.

- The Waterfalls of Hin Lat and Na Mueang

- The phallic rock formations at the most southern point of Lamai

- The Butterfly Gardens

Climate

Tropical. Hot all year round.

- December to March is the best season as the temperature averages around 30 degrees centigrade

with fresher nights and a little tropical rain possible during December.

- April to May are the hottest months with very little rain.

- June to September are less hot with the chance of occasional rainfall.

- October and November are the most rainy months although not every day!
